Round and Round the Garden is the third in Alan Ayckbourn’s famous Norman Conquests Trilogy. During the past five years St john’s Players have performed the first two plays, Table Manners and Living Together, and I am delighted to have been allowed to direct the third play to complete the trilogy.
The “conquests” refer to Norman’s philandering with the three women in the cast, his wife and his two sisters in law, under the pretext of wanting to make everybody happy! His attempts create friction and confusion all round. The romantic weekend anticipated by Annie, the quiet weekend expected by Sarah, and the working one planned by Ruth, all fail to materialise as misunderstandings and chaos reign.
Ayckbourn’s characters are wonderfully drawn and we hope to do them full justice. Most members of the cast are enjoying a second and third opportunity to play the roles.
We were honoured to receive a NODA award for our production of Living Together, so we have a high standard to maintain. We hope we achieve it.
Enjoy the evening.
