One for the Road

Swan Theatre Studio (2013)

THE hilarious adult comedy One For The Road marked a welcome return for Worcester’s St John’s Players at the Swan Theatre Studio.

After a break of several years the Players were back with a production of the comedy from Willy Russell, perhaps best known for his plays Shirley Valentine and Educating Rita.

The Players took audiences back to the 1980s in this brilliantly observed comedy which has undercurrents of tragedy and pathos. Celebrating a milestone birthday, Dennis feels imprisoned in his middle class existence with his respectable wife Pauline and yearns to break out.

Matters come to a head with the arrival of Jane and Roger, the stalwarts of the social scene who epitomise all he detests about estate living.

Russell is a scouser and the Players chose to set the play in Liverpool, as they felt this does the greatest justice to his humour.
