It was 50 years ago today (20th June 1965) that the Swan Theatre opened, providing an invaluable venue for the performing arts in Worcester to this very day. St John’s Players have been fortunate enough to perform at the Swan for 48 out of those 50 years, and today we perform one show on the Main Stage and one in the Vesta Tilley Studio each year.
To celebrate, we have delved into the archives and found a little gem – the programme from our first performance in the Swan Theatre – Will Any Gentlemen – which ran from 10th – 12th February 1966. Included is a snippet from a newspaper showing the architect’s model for the theatre – found on the back of a review for our previous production, Murder on Arrival, which had been staged at Henwick grove School!
Worcester Live will be celebrating 50 years of the Swan Theatre tonight with A Celebration of Worcester Talent, including contributions from many groups who regularly perform there. St John’s Players will be presenting a special preview from our next production, Takin’ Over the Asylum.
